Festivals & Sacred Traditions

Sri Lanka's festivals are among the most spectacular in all of Asia — fire, drums, elephants and devotion in a single breathtaking spectacle.

Esala Perahera

The grandest procession in Asia — 100 decorated elephants, fire dancers, and drummers through the streets of Kandy honouring the Sacred Tooth Relic.

Vesak Festival

The island transforms into a sea of lanterns and illuminated pandols celebrating the birth, enlightenment and passing of the Buddha.

Thai Pongal

The vibrant Tamil harvest festival — a joyous celebration of gratitude to the sun god, with colourful kolam and boiling rice offering.

Sinhala New Year

In April, the whole island celebrates the traditional New Year with rituals, oil lamps, milk rice, traditional games and the scent of jasmine in the air.
